A new book titled, “Grand Army Women : The GAR and Its Female Organizations,” is now available through http://www.grandarmymen.com.
The Grand Army of the Republic was formed for Civil War veterans of the Union. While it was a fraternal organization, several female auxiliary groups were also formed. While this book is described as a collector’s guide with discussions of items relating to the auxiliary women’s organizations (such as badges), the book also discusses the histories of the women’s groups. Looking at the table of contents (available on the information page), it looks like about half of the chapters cover the history of these groups, as well as a brief history of the formation of the GAR itself. Though there has long been interest in the GAR itself, equitable attention has not been paid to its women’s organizations making this book an important addition, even if its focus is not purely on the history of these groups. It may be a worthwhile purchase to those interested in the GAR and its auxiliaries, Civil War researchers, and those interested in women’s organizations.
